'Out of the Mist a Dragon' comes to Children's Prime Time Theatre on March 12

Using elegant reproductions of the classic Bunraku puppets of Japan, "Out of the Mist a Dragon" comes to Children's Prime Time Theatre on March 12 for a special matinee performance at The Center.

Lake Cumberland Performing Arts, in partnership with The Center for Rural Development, is presenting a special matinee performance of  Children’s Prime Time Theatre’s “Out of the Mist a Dragon” on Saturday at The Center.

Prior to the performance, children will have a unique opportunity to learn more about the finer points of puppetry from professional puppeteers at a puppet construction workshop from noon-1:30 p.m. in The Center’s front lobby.

“Out of the Mist a Dragon,” set to begin after the workshop at 2:30 p.m. in The Center’s theatre, is by Tennessee’s Wood and Strings Puppet Theatre and will give the audience an exotic glimpse of puppetry styles rarely seen in this country.

The main characters of the show are reproductions of the classical and exquisite Bunraku puppets of Japan. The two male Bunraku puppets stand four feet tall, and the lovely young princess, Lotus, is three feet and six inches tall.

In this romantic drama, a young man on a journey of self-discovery encounters traditional folk puppets from North America, England, and Indonesia.

The first 100 children to attend the puppet construction workshop will get to build their own puppet. Professional puppeteers will work with workshop participants to help them craft a puppet they can take home with them.

Dianna Winstead, associate director of arts, culture, and events at The Center, said the workshop is open to children of all ages and is a fun and exciting way to explore the art of puppetry.

“Each child will be able to build a puppet they can use for entertainment and future learning opportunities,” Winstead said. “We want children and families to spend time together and enjoy a cultural experience at Children’s Prime Time Theatre matinee performance of ‘Out of the Mist a Dragon’ presented at a special time on Saturday that’s convenience with their busy schedule.”

These performances are funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and Kentucky Arts Council.
