Located in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty just off the New Jersey coast, Ellis Island was the gateway for more than 12 million immigrants seeking a new life in America between the late 1800s to the mid-1950s.

Lake Cumberland Performing Arts, in partnership with The Center for Rural Development, presents a remarkable story of heart-warming courage and life-changing challenges in American Family Theatre’s award-winning musical, “Ellis Island,” on Friday, March 4, at The Center in Somerset.

The musical, which recaptures the hopes and dreams of immigrants about to embark on a new life in America, will be presented at 10 a.m. for local and area students in The Center’s next School Time Theatre performance, and at 7 p.m. during the Children’s Prime Time Theatre performance.

“This live, musical performance celebrates the multi-cultural foundation of our nation and the immigration experience, as these immigrants came through Ellis Island on their way to a new life,” Dianna Winstead, associate director of arts, culture, and events, said. “The School Time Theatre performance is geared toward students in grades 4-9, but can be educational for all ages.”

A pre-show event featuring a free musical performance by the Southern Middle School Ensemble, led by music director Marsha Nash, will be held from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in The Center’s front lobby prior to the Children’s Prime Time Theatre performance of “Ellis Island.” The group of students, representing the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade, will perform a selection of patriotic, American folk, and vintage music.

An optional buffet, catered by Sonny’s Bar-B-Q, will be served at the pre-show event.

The pre-show event is sponsored by Clear Channel Lake Cumberland and Sonny’s Bar-B-Q.
