“Aquascapes and More,” an exhibit of 29 original paintings by Somerset artist Peggy Sherry, is on display at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset.

The exhibit, inspired by Sherry’s love for the beauty of the region, depicts one of the state’s most visited attractions, Cumberland Falls, and other places of interest in and around South Central Kentucky and beyond.

“These paintings are a result of many hours spent hiking at Cumberland Falls and along Kentucky’s Sheltowee Trace,” Sherry said. “Most of the paintings involve scenes of water, and several were painted on location at Cumberland Falls.”

In the exhibit, Sherry has captured the scenic beauty of Cumberland Falls, often called the “Niagara of the South,” from a unique vantage point as seen from Eagle Falls’ Trail No. 9 just downstream from the falls.

“The Center is honored to showcase the talents of one of Somerset’s own artists and the love she has for the beauty in our region,” Dianna Winstead, associate director of arts, culture, and events, said. “Peggy is such a talented artist, and these paintings give us an opportunity to see and enjoy her work.”

Sherry, who received the Arts and Culture Award at The Center’s 15th Anniversary Celebration on Sept. 30, has exhibited her work in venues around the state and is often represented at the Kentucky Artisan Center in Berea. She is a signature status member of the Kentucky Watercolor Society and a juried member of the Sheltowee Artisans.

A reception, hosted by Lake Cumberland Performing Arts in partnership with The Center, will be held Saturday, Dec. 3, from 6-7 p.m. in the front lobby of The Center for guests to meet the artist at a pre-show event prior to the Center Stage holiday performance of “Mooseltoe: A New Moosical.”

The exhibit may be viewed from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday and during extended evening and weekend hours when The Center, located at 2292 South U.S. 27 (at Traffic Light 15), is open to the public for special events.
